When Merchandise Becomes Art

A New Service for Those Who Know Design Makes the Difference
There is a moment when an object stops being a simple gadget and becomes a collector's piece, an identity symbol, a powerful communication tool. That moment is born when there is a strong graphic idea behind it, built with artistic intention.
This is the philosophy that led to the creation of MerchandArt, the new section of residentartist.it dedicated to the creative customization of merchandise and outfits. Not just printing on request: an artistic collaboration between client and designer to transform a garment or object into a vehicle for brand identity, nostalgia, and pop culture.
"Corporate merchandise works when it carries an emotion with it. MerchandArt was born to do exactly that: turn a concept into something people want to wear." — ResidentArtist
What MerchandArt Offers
MerchandArt is designed for those seeking creative merchandising solutions with real artistic value. It serves companies, associations, shops, event organizers, as well as private collectors looking for unique pieces or small high-quality print runs.
01 — Print on Demand No minimum quantity. Each piece is produced on order — ideal for testing, personalized gifts, or small-scale launches.
02 — Stock Runs For those who need larger quantities: dedicated production runs with cost advantages and advanced customization options.
03 — Custom Design From concept art to finished product: every graphic is tailored to the client's brief, with a distinctive illustrative style.
04 — Outfits & Merchandise T-shirts, sweatshirts, tote bags, posters and much more. The graphic design can be adapted to any medium while maintaining visual consistency.
The process begins with a creative consultation: concept, color palette, illustrative style, and the message the product should convey are defined together. The result is always an object that tells a story.
Generation Robot: The First Themed Series
For the launch of MerchandArt, ResidentArtist has chosen to celebrate an era that shaped the collective imagination of entire generations: animated cartoons from the 1980s and 1990s. Giant robots, heroic pilots, cosmic battles — stories that still speak today of courage, freedom, and identity.
The first series is informally called "Generation Robot" and features t-shirts dedicated to three iconic protagonists from that golden age of animation.
Haran Banjo — Daitarn III (Sunrise, 1978)
The wealthy, brilliant, and unstoppable protagonist of Invincible Robot Daitarn III. Haran Banjo is one of the most charismatic characters in mecha anime history: his mix of playboy flair and absolute sense of justice makes him truly unique. The t-shirts dedicated to him are available in two versions: with a pop-style character graphic on a brown background (warm monochromatic tone) and on a cobalt blue background. The version featuring the Daitarn III robot is available in black and brown.
Amuro Ray (Peter Ray) — Mobile Suit Gundam (Sunrise, 1979)
The Newtype par excellence. Amuro Ray is the pilot of the legendary RX-78-2 Gundam in Yoshiyuki Tomino's original series: a fragile and brilliant young man, who grew up inside a war he never chose. The t-shirt featuring him — known in Italy as Peter Ray — comes in burnt orange with a comic-style graphic, an intense close-up crop on the pilot's eyes in his combat suit. A graphic that communicates tension and determination.
Rick Hunter — Robotech / Macross Saga (Tatsunoko, 1982)
Ace pilot, reluctant romantic, accidental hero. Rick Hunter — Ichijō Hikaru in the Japanese original Super Dimension Fortress Macross — is the heart of the Macross Saga, the first and most beloved of the three series that make up the American adaptation Robotech. The t-shirt portrays him in combat suit alongside his Veritech Fighter, in a composition that plays on a deep blue palette and the iconic colors of the series.
Why 80s and 90s Cartoons Still Work
This is not simple nostalgia. The robots and superheroes of Japanese animation from that era left a deep mark on European popular culture: in Italy in particular, through broadcasts on Rete 4, Italia 1 and various local television channels, these shows shaped the visual and value-driven aesthetic of millions of people now between 35 and 50 years old.
Putting those characters on a t-shirt doesn't mean looking backward: it means speaking a shared language, creating immediate recognition, building community around a common cultural identity. For companies, this translates into an extraordinary potential for emotional connection with their audience.
When a customer wears a t-shirt featuring a character that marked their childhood, they are not just buying a garment: they are declaring who they are. MerchandArt creates that bond — for brands, for events, for anyone who wants to communicate through art.
How to Order
All t-shirts from the "Generation Robot" series are available on request through residentartist.it in the MerchandArt section, in two ways:
Print on Demand — Single orders or small quantities, with no minimum. Perfect for gifts, collectors, or for testing a design before a larger production run.
Stock Runs — For larger quantities intended for shops, events, marketing campaigns or corporate gifts. Dedicated production with the option to further customize colors, sizes and packaging.
